Toadstool Geologic Park | frigid maternity session with Emily & Josh

I met Emily and Josh while working as a barista in a small town coffee shop in northern Colorado. These two would come in during my slower times of the day, pull up to the bar and keep me company for hours while I washed dishes and cleaned. I loved the simplicity of working in a coffee shop. The smell of freshly ground beans, the way the levers feel when you pull a shot…I still remember their favorite drinks.

Anyway, I photographed them in the Medicine Bow Mountains of Wyoming one gorgeous summer evening a few years ago. The spot I wanted to show them was 1.5 hours away from the Colorado front range, but they were game for the drive. After the sun sank behind the granite walls, Emily had sandwiches waiting in the car that we munched all the way home. It was such a great adventure, and one of those times that you drive out of the mountains with the magic hour light closing in and you think, “damn, life is good.”

Now we live 8 hours apart but that didn’t stop us from trekking several hours to a location between us to document the (then-nearing) arrival of baby Emmet. I’m grateful for these humans. They’re some of the most genuinely kind and joyful people I know. Always up for an adventure and smiling through the cold (and sleet and snow, in the case of this day at Toadstool).
